Roseanna McGowan

MCGOWAN

Roseanna McGowan (nee Ziccardi), passed peacefully on December 14, 2022. She was surrounded by her loving husband, Timothy McGowan of 50 years and daughter, Stephanie (John) Barber at the time of her passing. She was the adored “Nana” to John Oliver and Henry Barber, the beloved sister to Deborah (Jerry) Luebbe and dearest friend of Vicki (Tom) Osborne for 65 years. Roseanna was preceded in death by her parents, Dolores and Guido (Ben) Ziccardi, sisters-in-law Carol Macaluso and Mary Jo McGowan, and brothers-in-law Ronald and Patrick McGowan. She is survived by her husband, daughter, grandsons, sister, great aunts, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Roseanna was born on July 23, 1953 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is the second daughter to Dolores and Guido Ziccardi. Roseanna and her sister Deborah attended Holy Family School in Price Hill as children when they lived on Elberon Avenue. It was at this time that Rose met her dearest friend Vicki when they were 5 years old. Rose and Vicki remained close throughout Holy Family and then Rose and her family moved to Delhi (affectionately called the Center of the Universe) and she changed schools to attend St. Dominic. But in two short years, Roseanna and Vicki were reunited at Seton High School and have remained the closest of friends since.

Roseanna and Tim met at an Our Lady of Lourdes dance when Roseanna was a freshman and Tim was a senior in high school. Roseanna thought Tim was a dance chaperone and said he could look her number up in the phone book if he really wanted to see her again. Thankfully her last name was Ziccardi and not Smith! Tim eventually called her and so began their love for each other that lasted over 55 years. Eventually, Tim and Rose were married and had their daughter Stephanie. She was the apple of Rose's eye, that is, until her grandsons John Oliver and Henry were born. Stephanie happily gave up her title when she saw how deeply her Mom adored her grandsons and spoiled them with love and affection. She was their "Nana" and John Oliver and Henry loved to visit, play toys, and have sleepovers at Nana and Papa's house. Now Nana is their Guardian Angel in Heaven—the one who watches over them making certain they listen to their Mom and Dad too and that they “stop wrestling so much”!

Roseanna enjoyed decorating her home, especially around the holidays. This hobby led to her work at Delhi Flower and Garden Center's Design Department for several years. She would design beautiful arrangements and decorate the display Christmas Trees every year. We always laughed because she usually had glitter on her face between July and January when decorating was in full swing. Rose made several close friends during her time at the Garden Center and developed relationships with a few customers over the years as well. It was through one of her customers that she began volunteering and eventually working fulltime as a Kindergarten Aide at her Grade School Alma Mater, Holy Family School. Roseanna spent over 20 years working with children and being a good friend and colleague to many faculty and staff.

Roseanna was a wonderful friend and an exceptional wife, mother and grandmother. She raised her daughter to be well educated, strong, and independent. Roseanna set an example of how to love unconditionally and passed along her great sense of humor as well. She faced several obstacles head

on, especially with her health, with great optimism and hope. Even when she was coming toward the end of her life, she never lost her sense of humor.

Rose’s love of animals was passed onto her by her father. She and Tim rescued many cats and dogs throughout her life and spoiled them almost as much as she spoiled her grandsons. She was funny and charismatic, an excellent decorator having designed many silk floral arrangements and wreaths, an expert bow maker, and like her mother, Dolores, a wonderful cook. Rose was the kind that doesn’t use recipes and follows her heart with seasonings. Her homemade sauce, meatballs, manicotti, and Froppes at Christmas were the food highlights each year. In the summer, you would often find her floating in her daughter and son-in-law’s swimming pool with her grandsons, sister, and good friends…all of them affectionately called The Ladies of Summer. It became her favorite place to be, and it gave her daughter great happiness to see her Mom enjoying herself surrounded by the people she loved the most.

Roseanna will be missed tremendously by many. Her spirit and memory will live on in those who had the privilege to know and love her. Her pain and suffering are over, and she is at peace with God now.
