Patricia C. Helfferich, affectionately known as Pat, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025, at Bayley Place, with the compassionate care of the nurses from Queen City Hospice. Born on October 27, 1931, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was a beacon of warmth and kindness in the lives she touched. She was a beloved daughter of Herman and Marcella Schaefer Fessel and cherished sister to Alton (Karen), Carl (Deloris) and Shirley. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Alfred Helfferich, to whom she was married for 68 wonderful years.
Throughout her life, Pat radiated an outgoing and social personality that drew people to her. She was talkative, loving, and generous—a true friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Each mention of Pat would inevitably be met with admiration, with many recalling her sweet nature and kindness. Her joyful spirit shone brightly, especially during cherished moments spent with her family.
Pat’s proudest accomplishment was her family. She was a devoted mother to her three children: Karen (Dale) Menkhaus, Mark (Karen) Helfferich, and the late Michael (Debby) Helfferich. Her heart swelled with pride as she watched her children grow and succeed. Pat also took immense joy in her role as a grandmother to her grandchildren: Renee (Tim) Bajorek, Tricia Leisgang, Ashley (Matt) Cathcart, Tyler (Sara) Helfferich, Aaron (Brooke) Helfferich, Nick (Meredith) Helfferich, Rachel (Ian) Shoup, Nathan (Mackenzie) Helfferich, Anne Menkhaus, Jeanne Wardwell, Jim (Sara) Menkhaus, and Joe Menkhaus. With each new grandchild and later great-grandchild—Alex, Evan, Drew, Hannah, Marcella, John, Emerson, Oaklee, Heidi, Nolan, Kyla, Cora, Hallie, Shep, Heather, Hunter, and Olivia—her heart overflowed with love and joy. The accomplishments and milestones of her family were a source of great satisfaction for her.
Pat suffered heartbreaking tragic losses her life. During the difficult times of loss of her dearest loved ones and complications with her eyesight, Pat approached life with remarkable strength, courage and determination, demonstrating the true essence of resilience.
She embraced her creativity in many forms; a fabulous cook and baker, she delighted in creating delicious family recipes and knitting beautiful blankets and baby sweaters. Pat found joy in the simple pleasures of life: fishing, boating, and snowmobiling. Many winters she basked in the sun of Florida, while summers found her enjoying the serenity of Brookville Lake and salmon fishing in Michigan. Her enthusiasm for sports was infectious; she passionately followed the Cincinnati Bengals and Reds, listening intently to every game, despite being blind.
Pat found fulfillment in her part-time work at Biggs, where she showcased her vibrant personality as she engaged in food demos. She had an innate ability to connect with others, selling anything with her cooking skills, charm and warmth.
As we remember Pat, we hold dear the countless treasured memories shared with her—making buckeyes and thumbprint cookies during Christmas, enjoying family dinner celebrations at their MacArthur Place home, and cheering on her family at dance recitals, swim meets, and ball games. She left a lasting imprint on us all and will be deeply missed.
