Obituary

William Abanto, age 91, passed away on Monday, May 4.

William was born on October 14, 1934, in Cajamarca, Peru, to Alfonsina and Bruno Abanto. He was one of eight children—Pepe, Norita, Antonio, Fabiola, Julio, Manuel, and Bruno—and was the last surviving sibling.

In 1952, William immigrated to the United States, where he and his brothers Julio, Bruno, and Manuel, began to build a life here in the US. He built a life defined by perseverance, dedication, and a deep commitment to family.

William shared 52 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sylvia, who preceded him in death. Together, they built a strong and loving family.

He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather uncle and great uncle . He is survived by his children John, Lou (Angie), and Julia (Rob), and was preceded in death by his son Rick. He also leaves behind five grandchildren—Alexis (Jim), Max, Simon, Cori (Matt), and Kaitlyn (Ben)—and three great-grandchildren, Allie, Mia, and Theo, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins both in the US and Peru.

He will be remembered for his strength, resilience, and unwavering love for his family and community. In his later years he would translate, notarize and generally assist the non-English speaking Hispanic community with their needs for little or no money.

William often shared his favorite phrase: “I will win because I have faith, courage, and enthusiasm.” Those words reflected the way he lived his life and the spirit he passed on to those who knew him.

Family and Friends may visit from 9:30 AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 8, 2026 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 3450 Lumardo Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45238.  Followed by a procession to St. Joe New Cemetery where William will be laid to rest.

William Abanto will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched.
