Obituary

James P. Gresham, affectionately known as Jim or Jimmy, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 13, 2026, in Deer Park, Ohio. Born on July 23, 1940, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim lived a life marked by quiet devotion, deep roots in his community, and unwavering love for his family.

Jim’s early years were spent in Northside before his family moved to English Woods, a place filled with fond memories that he cherished throughout his life. Even after the area was abandoned, he would often drive children through English Woods to reminisce about its past. A proud West Sider and lifelong lover of Cincinnati, Jim knew every inch of the city from his 27 years behind the wheel as a taxi driver in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. After working his way through college, Jim’s precision stood out early in his work as a billing clerk for trucking companies. Following a brief career as a traveling salesman, he embraced entrepreneurship, becoming his own boss by driving a taxi.

Among the many riders Jim chauffeured were celebrities, from whom he would graciously secure autographs for his children. His large orange cab numbered 666 remains a vivid memory for those who knew him. Jim’s generosity extended far beyond his profession; he was known to drop everything to offer rides to family and friends at all hours, no matter how late. Despite modest earnings, Jim delighted in giving thoughtful gifts to his children and grandchildren, a testament to his warm and giving spirit.

Jim’s academic journey led him to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Cincinnati. A man of considerable intellect, he had a penchant for solving crossword puzzles and Sudoku in his cab while smoking a Doral or Pall Mall Ultra Light 100. He delighted in telling corny jokes and quoting classic films, often surprising others with his encyclopedic knowledge when watching Jeopardy. An avid reader, Jim enjoyed the daily newspaper and historical books, and his favorite movies were old westerns and musicals. His love of music from the 1940s and ’50s, which he affectionately called “golden oldies,” was often shared with his children, much to his amusement.

Jim was deeply devoted to his Catholic faith, regularly attending Mass initially at St. Teresa of Avila and later at St. Savior. He held his faith close throughout his life, which provided him with comfort and strength.

A passionate sports fan, Jim never missed an opportunity to watch any game on television, especially those featuring the Cincinnati Reds. He took pride in sharing this love by attending football games at Elder High School and the University of Cincinnati with his children. Turfway Park was a favorite destination for outings with friends and family. Jim was also a Cincinnati chili connoisseur, favoring Camp Washington Chili and Skyline.

Family was the cornerstone of Jim’s life. He was the devoted son of the late Croley James Gresham and Elsie Dorothy Holmes and the cherished brother of the late Mary Patricia “Pat” (Gresham) Garrison, Melvin “Brad” Gresham, and Mike Gresham. His dedication extended into caregiving, particularly for his brother Robert “Bobby” Gresham, to whom he gave much support throughout his life.

Jim is survived by his loving son, Matt Gresham, and daughter-in-law, Carrie; daughters Kate, Jen Dozer (and son-in-law David), Amy, and Teresa; and grandchildren Jonah, Elizabeth, Meadow, and Cordelia. He also leaves behind step-grandchildren Loren and Bobby (with wife Estela) and a step great-grandson, Robbie. Additionally, Jim's brother Robert “Bobby” Gresham, along with many nieces, nephews, and their families, carry forward his memory with respect and affection.

Throughout his life, Jim embodied quiet strength, generosity, and a deep sense of responsibility to his loved ones. He touched many lives with his kindness and stories—often humorous and always heartfelt—of his “hillbilly” Kentucky family, many of which were true tales. For the last three years, he resided at Deer Park Assisted Living, where he was known for his gentle presence.

Friends and family are invited to honor and celebrate Jim’s life with a visitation on May 26, 2026, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Dalbert, Woodruff & Isenogle Funeral Home, located at 2880 Boudinot Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio. Mass will follow at Our Lady of Victory, 810 Neeb Road, Cincinnati, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a graveside service at St. Joseph (New) Cemetery at 4500 Foley Road at 12:15 p.m.

James P. Gresham leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and community spirit that will be remembered by all fortunate enough to have known him. His life was one quietly well-lived, devoted to family, faith, and the city he loved so dearly.
